Santana, Spring & Summer

Backstage at the Rolando Santana Show during Fashion Week 2011, Patrick was gathering a model’s hair into a high ponytail and talking about the Sixties. “For his Fall and Winter collection, Rolando was inspired by the abstract paintings of Philip Guston, done in the late 1960’s,” he explained, “and I think his Spring and Summer clothing still has a real 60’s influence to it. To capture that same feel, I want the hair to be more graphic and controlled.”

Rolando Santana’s Spring Collection was about vintage whites, golds and champagnes and flowing silk chiffron and cotton. The clothing was elegant but ethereal, the models were all glow and gossamer, and Patrick’s styling was decidedly feminine. When finished, his ponytail showed off plenty of height on top, with a flirty flip on the ends for a 60’s finish—and a finesse that’s totally of the moment.

The Patrick Melville Salon is now also an official rotating art gallery. This past week was the kick off party to celebrate over 30 original works of Pablo Picasso throughout the newly refurbished salon, which was hosted by special guest Harry Connick Jr! This is a must see and will be available for your viewing pleasure for 6 weeks only…(right in sync with your color touch-ups). What’s next…there’s already talk of Dali! Where else can you go to view museum quality art while getting gorgeous!

As a teenager possessing a passion for art I was inquiring into enrollment at the Pittsburgh Art Institute. My other natural talent though was detailing hair braids. Word got out and my neighbor girls were lining up at my door exiting sporting every kind of french braid. My friends resembled Bo Derek from "10" , Peaches from Peaches and Herb even Stevie Wonder was in the house...decorative beads included. They soon convinced me to attend Beauty School which only required 1 year of schooling vs. 4 years in art school. It was one of the best decisions I made in my life, even though dad didn't think so at the time. LOL....

The Patrick Melville Salon and Spa had the exciting pleasure of hosting a 3 day health and beauty suite at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills to prepare celebs for the Oscar red carpet.

My assistant DanieI and I recreated the gorgeous and natural copper red for the teenage Cate Blanchett in the Oscar-nominated Benjamin Button movie played by up-and-coming young Hollywood actress, Madison Beaty. I also gave Maria Menounos, the beautiful Pantene girl and red carpet host, shimmery swirls of cinnamon browns as Patrick cut and styled her to perfection. Maria is not only beautiful, but a sweetheart! We also had Lindsay Lohan pay us a visit when she experienced the healing hands of Juhi Singh, our amazing acupuncturist. Debra Messing even stopped by for some Oscar prepping!

hanks also to the talented Adam Markarian, from the Sebastian Artistic Team and our salon in New York, as well as Jon Patrick, our West Coast presence. It was fun…but we are all glad to back in N.Y.C.! —Rick
